World Missions Update: La Gonâve Haiti Partners

Our Vision: A future where everyone on La Gonâve experiences thriving, abundant life. For over 30 years, Haitian and American partners have been working side by side in mutually transformative relationships to build vibrant, hopeful, and resilient communities on the island of La Gonâve. This is our mission.

Our People are Our Strength. Together, Haitian and American partners share their hopes for the future and craft a vision for how to realize them. This model of development is challenging and messy at times, but it builds a sense of trust and mutuality. By listening to and valuing the insights of each other, the partners become a community where the dignity of all is recognized.

A day in Platon Baláis at St. Simon and St. Jude, where there is also a large parish garden: Père Vil visited to check on the garden and say hello to students and staff. Together, they harvested corn, sweet potatoes, and cassava for a meal to share. Students learned about growing and preparing these foods too!

Kids at St. Francis celebrated Easter at school! The teachers are so dedicated to creating a fun and engaging environment for the kids. They work hard to make days like this one special. We hope our partners in the US and in Haiti had a joyful Easter weekend!

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who supported our March family fundraising event, “BBQ, Bocce, and Bluegrass” on Daniel Island, which allowed for flexibility to fund a variety of top priorities. Some of those include paying teacher and healthcare worker salaries and being able to support administrative and fiduciary costs that keep our partnership running efficiently. Through your generosity, our partners in Haiti can continue shaping a better future on La Gonâve for our Haitian brothers and sisters.

St. Philip’s Sister Church, St. Jean-Baptiste: We St. Philippians continue to wait patiently on the Lord for His timing with the desire for peace where people continue to praise the Lord despite the gang violence, chaos, and simple everyday needs, such as clean water and food. Work continues on the wall that will surround the campus and not only protect against erosion, but also help with security issues, as the supplies needed for school lunches, microfinance, education, and medical emergencies have been vulnerable to theft. This wall ensures that St. Jean-Baptiste will remain standing for many years to come.

Proper infrastructure creates growth. Projects stimulate the local economy by creating jobs. Regular maintenance of all buildings includes weatherproofing/fireproofing, maintaining water collection systems, and performing repairs. All structures are built to multitask; classrooms are used for the microfinance program, churches double as mobile clinic sites, and every building is an opportunity for water collection.

After the devastating impact of the 2010 earthquake, all new buildings are designed wwith updated standards that make them much stronger. These buildings are made to last for generations to come. Someday, kids will say that their grandfather built that.

We pray for Haiti: God of compassion, please watch over the people of Haiti, and weave out the political unrest and corruption with wonders of goodness and grace. Surround those who are affected by these ongoing issues of poverty and basic needs with a sense of your present love, and hold them in faith. Though they face daily challenges, may they find joy in you and be comforted; guide us as a church to find ways of providing assistance that heals wounds and provides hope. Help us to remember that when one of your children suffer we all suffer. We pray the use of our gifts and resources will bring hope and encouragement to all Haitians and the glory to Lord God in His precious and holy Name. Amen.
