Glorifying God Through a Saturday Serve

“It is amazing to see how God is working in this ministry!” These words from the Reverend Dr. Marion Platt, Executive Director of Star Gospel Mission, ring in my ears as I reflect on our St. Philip’s Saturday Serve experience this past weekend, when a group of around 40 volunteers, including 15 St. Philippians, gathered for a morning of grounds preparation and beautification of Star Gospel’s campus.

What God is doing at the Mission is truly amazing––and it’s happening fast. The next several weeks will see the start of several building projects to provide housing for homeless women and children. As Jimmy, our team leader, divvied up the tasks according to ability and talent and prayed over our efforts, I was reminded of the body of Christ coming together to serve. With each shrub trimmed, wall painted, weed pulled, and stone moved, we could visualize the transformation occurring on the grounds and could also imagine the peace, love, hope, and joy to be stirred in the hearts those who will call this place home in the near future.

As Jesus said in Luke 16:9 and Father O’Dell illuminated in his Sunday message, “I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of unrighteous wealth, so that when it fails, they may receive you into the eternal dwellings.” Saturday Serve at Star Gospel Mission was an opportunity to make new friends, to serve, and to glorify God laying up treasures in heaven.
