Delivering Medical Treatments and a Gospel Message in Liberia

Praise God from whom ALL blessings flow! We have recently returned from our sixth Three Rivers Outreach Medical Mission to Liberia in west Africa, and I am blessed and thrilled to report that despite a rocky start to our travels, the mission itself went perfectly smoothly as only God can cause. And we had one of our most successful and fruitful trips to date!

Two days prior to our planned departure with United Airlines, we were notified that our flights had been cancelled and rescheduled for two days later. This posed an untenable situation as we would lose three days of clinical time and hundreds of patients would lose out on their opportunity to be evaluated and treated. We thought all was well when we rescheduled for a day earlier than originally planned, but circumstances became quite dire when we arrived at the Charleston airport only to learn that we were not on the manifest––and what’s worse, we had no ability to get on another United Airlines flight. As one might imagine, we were distraught as now it appeared as though we might not make it to Liberia at all. God, however, provided the answer and we were able to book flights on another airline and make our connection in Brussels, Belgium. God is GREAT!

Once we arrived, the clinic ran well, and we saw a near record number of patients: over 560 with 65% return visits. We are seeing tremendous results in our treatment of hypertension and diabetes with often drastic reductions in readings. Patients are gaining trust and understanding of what we are hoping to accomplish through regular and routine visits and ongoing treatment of two conditions that occur in staggering numbers in this population of God’s people. Most importantly, though, we and the team there in Liberia can minister to our brothers and sisters both physically and spiritually through daily preaching and singing of God’s Word as well as providing medical care and attention.

There’s good news from beyond the clinic, too, as the country is working on rebuilding a dilapidated infrastructure. In the six months since I was last there, there has been much progress in the way of new roads and––most excitingly––the bringing of electricity to the area around the clinic. This is the first time electricity will be available to people there! Many thanks and much appreciation to St. Philip’s for all the prayers and well wishes, as well as the financial support given. No doubt your prayers were heard and answered! Please continue to pray for the people of Liberia and Three Rivers International Medical Outreach.
